Position Overview LHH Recruitment Solutions is seeking an experienced Lead Estimator with a strong mechanical HVAC background to join our leadership team. This individual will oversee all estimating functions for major commercial projects ensuring accurate takeoffs, competitive pricing, and strategic bid proposals. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of estimating large scale mechanical and HVAC scopes, brings a deep understanding of union labor environments, and thrives in a fast paced, deadline driven setting. Key Responsibilities Estimating & Pre-Construction Lead the full mechanical/HVAC estimating process for large commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. Review drawings, specifications, and project documents to develop accurate and detailed cost estimates. Prepare quantity takeoffs for HVAC systems including piping, ductwork, equipment, controls, and supporting infrastructure. Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and vendor pricing; build comprehensive and competitive bid packages. Assess constructability, schedule impacts, installation sequencing, and potential value engineering opportunities. Develop budget estimates at conceptual, schematic, and final design stages. Leadership & Collaboration Mentor junior estimators; provide technical direction and support. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, executives, and field operations to confirm scope and pricing accuracy. Interface directly with clients, general contractors, and design teams to clarify scope, resolve discrepancies, and ensure alignment. Process & Strategy Maintain a deep understanding of local labor costs (including union environments such as Local 638), material pricing trends, and market conditions. Track historical project data to continuously refine estimating accuracy. Drive improvements in estimating tools, templates, and internal workflows. Required Qualifications 10 years of mechanical HVAC estimating experience , including leadership responsibilities. Extensive experience with large commercial projects (e.g., higher education, healthcare, aviation, power/energy, public works, high???rise, or similar). Strong knowledge of mechanical systems including HVAC equipment, chillers, boilers, air handlers, pumps, controls, etc. Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., QuickPen/Trimble, QuoteSoft, Bluebeam, Timberline, or similar). Ability to interpret drawings and specifications with exceptional accuracy and attention to detail. Excellent communication, negotiation, and client facing skills. Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop budgeting strategies for complex projects. Preferred Qualifications Experience working within union mechanical/HVAC environments . Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent technical background. Experience estimating design build or design assist scopes. Why Join?
